The AGM of the Friends of Whitby Abbey will be held at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday, November 18th, 2017 in the Normanby Room, Pannett Park Museum, Whitby.
The AGM will be preceded by a ‘meet and greet’ at 10.45 a.m.
This year’s guest speakers will be the Chairman of the Friends, Roger Pickles, and professional Archaeologist and Trustee of the Friends, David Hunter.
Over the past two years the Friends have been involved in surveying the site of the Grandmontine Priory at Grosmont and, more recently have conducted a series of surveys, under licence to English Heritage, at Whitby Abbey.
Grosmont Priory was the 1st of three such Grandmontine priories ever to be built in England. Roger’s illustrated talk will include the history of the French order, their architecture, their way of life and what the survey has revealed to date. David will embellish the talk with archaeological artefacts recovered from the priory site and the way ahead. In addition, he will give an illustrated talk on the results of the initial surveys carried out at the Abbey Site this year.
The talk, which will take place directly after the AGM, is entitled, ‘Recent Archaeological Surveys of Grosmont Priory and Whitby Abbey carried out by The Friends of Whitby Abbey’, and will last approximately 60 minutes.
